Berroja Winery: A privilege for the senses
The location of the winery and its 24 hectares of vineyards on a hill 250m above sea level with views over the entire Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, allows us to interpret and show the Reserve, with its most interesting points, as well as the confines of Bizkaia to the south.
The vineyard and its management is another of the facets that we show in addition to the foundation of our elaboration, to complete the visit with a tasting of the txakolis and local products of artisan origin.
The dominant vision of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve allows us to locate points of heritage interest such as Santimamiñe, the Castro de Arrola, Gernika, the mouth of the estuary and its beaches, the Roman town of Forua, the Bocineros Mountains of Bizkaia (Oiz , Sollube, Gorbea and Ganekogorta) as well as the confines of Bizkaia in Orduña and Sabigain (Urkiola).
In that place we interpret the fishing and agricultural tradition of the Reserve and its relationship with the seasonal gastronomy that pairs with the txakoli that is made in the area.
The management and work of the vineyard is explained, based on the native varieties Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza and the foreign Riesling, linked to a soil with defined and uniform characteristics, and its conformation of plots based on its orography and orientation, to produce a grape in a sustainable way and closely related to the fauna and flora that surrounds us, allowing the development of native species, such as oaks, chestnuts, ash trees, holly, strawberry trees, laurel, holm oaks and other relict species that exist in the surroundings of the vineyard .
In the winery, the work that is carried out in handling the grapes and their musts is explained to achieve a Txakoli that can be stored over the years.
Then comes the tasting part, with a tasting of three of our txakolis and local products from artisan producers in the region: salted antxoas, belly belly in olive oil, Idiazabal cheese and wood-fired country bread, which are the perfect companion for txakoli.
